Source consistency in B2B AI discovery: a research brief

A source-mapping framework for finding where a company, product, category, and evidence disagree across owned, claimed, earned, and external sources.

Research question

When an answer system describes a B2B company inaccurately, which source condition should the team investigate first?

Method

  1. List the material entities, relationships, claims, and constraints a buyer must understand.
  2. Map recurring sources into owned, claimed, earned, and external relationships.
  3. Compare wording, evidence, dates, and conflicts without assuming a source caused a model response.
  4. Assign the correction, contribution, or monitoring action to the relationship the team can actually influence.

Start with the information buyers need

Source work begins with a factual model of the business: what it is, who it is for, what it does, what supports its claims, and where its limits sit. Without that source of truth, consistency becomes repetition rather than accuracy.

Classify the source relationship

Owned sources can be corrected directly. Claimed profiles can be maintained. Earned sources require a useful contribution and an independent editorial decision. External sources may only be observed and answered through legitimate participation.

The relationship sets the responsible action. Publishing another blog post cannot repair every representation problem.

Look for conflicts, not just absences

A missing fact is one problem. Conflicting category labels, old product names, unsupported superlatives, and inconsistent market descriptions are often more damaging because they make a stable answer harder to assemble.

Preserve uncertainty

A source map can show where information recurs and conflicts. It cannot reveal a model provider's complete ranking or retrieval system. Report observed recurrence and the boundary of the search rather than assigning unearned causal weight.

Practical takeaways

  • Fix owned facts before amplifying them elsewhere.
  • Treat claimed profiles as maintained product information.
  • Earned coverage requires evidence worth independently publishing.

Limitations

What this publication does not establish

  • A recurring source is evidence of recurrence, not proof of model weighting.
  • External communities and editorial publishers remain outside direct control.
  • Source visibility varies by engine, mode, prompt, market, and time.
